as Light, Water,
and Wife
In both the ancient Mesopotamian world and the biblical world, people often thought about abstract theological concepts such as wisdom and life through vivid word pictures. Wisdom was not merely an idea; it could be imagined as light that drives away darkness, as life-giving water that sustains, or as a faithful companion. The opening chapters of Genesis draw on these same images. This approach integrates the familiar imagery found in Proverbs, the Psalms, and Revelation with related images that have always been present in Genesis, though their significance has often been overlooked. When we read Genesis 1–3 with that cultural background in view, the familiar story begins to open in new and theologically rich ways.
